The 2nd Annual SLS Brew Battle was held last night in Portland at Sustainable Harvest. It was a great night highlighting the great membership of both the Barista Guild AND the Roasters Guild, as well as many other great folks both in the coffee community and Portland community. Five teams battled it out for the chance to take home the trophy, but there could be only one winner. Teams of three, which included two baristas and a roaster, were required to manually brew a batch of coffee for two judges, and then batch brew the same coffee for a different two judges, with the total score the addition of both. Winning the competition, was the team of Jason Dominy, Jared Gum, and Phil Beattie, fresh off his appearance on the CNBC Special, "Coffee Addiction." Jason and Phil couldn't decide on two coffees they wanted to use, both sourced through their respective companies relationship with Sustainable Harvest. So, Phil had the idea to create a blend of the two coffees.

From Batdorf & Bronson Coffee, they used the Guatemala Finca El Valle, a coffee they've been buying for 13 years, and was the first relationship coffee of it's nature. From Dillanos, Phil roasted up a natural processed Costa Rican coffee just for the event, which was the first coffee they've bought through their relationship with Sustainable Harvest. Jason Clever brewed the coffee, and Jared batch brewed the airpot coffee on the Curtis Brewer. The astonishing thing was that the winning team won by an astonishing 60 points. For their win, they took home the giant trophy and the honor of being champs. Until next year. Overall, it was a great night of celebrating both Guilds and the amazing people who are a part of, and support them!
Special thanks to Curtis Brewers, Mahlkonig grinders, Sustainable Harvest, SCAA, and both the BGA and Roasters Guild.
